A Colorado anesthesiologists' organization has harsh words for a looming gubernatorial decision that could exempt the state from a federal Medicare rule that requires physician supervision for patients receiving anesthesia.
The move puts Medicare patients in danger in order to ease staffing problems for a few rural facilities, the Colorado Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) says. The state's board of medical examiners approved the decision to opt out of the requirement by a 5-4 vote last week. It now requires final approval from Governor Bill Owens, according to the CSA.
States may opt out of certain Medicare rules if doing so is consistent with state regulations and is in the best interest of citizens.
The CSA maintains that the decision is neither in the best interest of patients nor is it consistent with state laws. In Colorado, hospital regulations require physician supervision of anesthesia nurses.
