Defensive weapons in the healthcare environment

The IAHSS reported that 2012 had the distinction of having the greatest number of fatalities since the association began surveying its member hospitals nearly 20 years ago. About 98% of healthcare facilities now experience violence and criminal incidents.That leaves healthcare executives and leaders with the difficult decision about whether to arm security professionals with defensive weapons.

The use of lethal weapons and deadly force in a healthcare environment is in opposition to a hospital's purpose. Hospitals exist to heal, not to injure or risk lives. However, in America today, it is unreasonable to assume that institutions such as hospitals can exist as islands of safety in a sea of violence.
