A Minneapolis hospital narrowly avoided tragedy June 19 when a hillside overlooking the Mississippi River gave way, sending 6 to 8 feet of mud into a roadway, according to KMSP-TV.
The landslide, which took place on a day when Minnesota saw heavy storms that led to an emergency declaration from the governor and tornadoes across the state, caused about 15 stories of mud and debris to fall. The incident undermined the foundation of Fairview Riverside Hospital, the report said.
The TV station said officials were originally concerned about the stability of the structure. The hospital, which is the teaching hospital for the University of Minnesota, remained open, but hospital engineers said the foundation beneath Fairview’s oxygen tanks was compromised.
