A man described by officials as a transient has been charged with arson in fire that that burned a San Francisco Bay Area building housing the administrative offices of a children's hospital on April 4, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
According to the paper's report, John Jay Fitzgibbons, 43, admitted being in the area of the fire that started about 2 a.m. April 4, but claimed he did not remember setting or seeing a fire. He told officials he had been drinking and said he was in the area to visit someone. Fitzgibbons was later identified as a suspect after fire officials released a photo from a surveillance video to the public. Fitzgibbons has pleaded not guilty to the arson charge and will have a preliminary examination May 6, the paper reported.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at around 2:30 a.m. at the second-story administrative offices of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital of Oakland. It was not clear if the building is connected to the hospital itself. While the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, it still caused about $150,000 worth of damage, the paper reported.
