A new report suggests that disrespectful doctors that create a hostile environment toward their subordinates pose a danger to patient safety.

The report, published in Aeon Magazine, argues that bullying is widespreadamong populations such as medical students and nurses, who may be in a subordinate position to physicians and surgeons. The report suggests that the bullying is very subtle, and can lead to low confidence and discourage them from speaking about a patient’s condition.

Apparently, the report found that the hierarchal culture stems from a perception that being harsh “whips employees into shape,” making them better doctors.
