Corridor widths in hospitals and nursing homes have to be maintained clear and free up to 8 feet, right? Well, yes and no-- it depends on your location in the facility and the occupancy designation.

Healthcare facilities are permitted to have mixed occupancies, where the conditions and regulations of different occupancies are permitted within the same building. Some of the mixed occupancies are intermingled without separating barriers, and in these cases, compliance is required with the most restrictive requirement of each occupancy.

An alternative approach with mixed occupancies is to have multiple occupancies that are separated by a two-hour fire-rated barrier.
