Major mobile operators in the U.S. will support wireless emergency alerts that will not cost receivers' a dime, reports MobiHealthNews.
The alerts can come from federal, state, local and tribal government agencies regarding threats to safety, including severe weather events and missing children.
The program, Commercial Mobile Alert System and Personalized Localized Alerting Network, will be supplemental to the existing Emergency Alert System which disperses alerts via radio and television. Presidential Alerts, Imminent Threat Alerts, and AMBER alerts are the only public safety entities that can issue these widespread location-specific alerts.
The alert is based on location rather than phone number, so a Maine resident visiting Florida might be alerted about an approaching severe hurricane to the southeast.
