Psychiatric patients face much longer wait in EDs

Patients who show up at the emergency room for psychiatric emergencies wait on average 11.5 hours. Those who are older, uninsured or intoxicated wait longer, according to a study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

That average is 42% longer than the rest of the population. Researchers says the issue is compounded by the fact that from 2000 to 2007, emergency psychiatric visits rose 231%.
