In November 2011, the CDC released new guidelines that should be particularly helpful for safety officers and infection preventionists saddled with the responsibility of keeping track of immunization records for healthcare workers.
The document, entitled Immunization of Health-Care Personnel: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), is a compilation of all the CDC guidelines on healthcare worker immunizations, from hepatitis B to influenza.
Although the guidelines contain no new immunization recommendations, they consolidate the existing recommendations in one place, offering easy access for safety officers.
"The last time this was published all together was 1997," says Abigail Shefer, MD, FACP, associate director for science in the immunization services division of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC. "Now we put it all together, we have one document with all the current recommendations, so it makes it much clearer and easily accessible."
