There’s an easy way for hospitals to address the issue of legally carried firearms by non–law enforcement personnel, says Tony W. York, CHPA, CPP, senior vice president at HSS, Inc., a Denver-based security services company.

Most healthcare organizations put patients, visitors, and others coming into their facilities on notice that they are a weapons-free environment, says York. That alerts people, including those with a permit to carry a concealed gun, that the hospital does not allow guns and other weapons in its facility, he says.

If your state law does not prohibit firearms in hospitals, licensed individuals can legally bring a gun into your hospital unless you have signs banning firearms in your facility.
