Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, MD, and Garrett Memorial Hospital in Oakland, MD, share a mobile hospital shelter and are giving it a test this flu season to test its use for extended periods of time.
Intended to be used in the case of a disaster, the hospitals are introducing it to employees and testing its usability by using it as a site for Western Maryland Regional Medical Center's immunization program.
Representatives say the testing period also gives a clear picture of how the shelter might be used in the case of a pandemic flu or similar events. The shelter is 23-feet wide and 72-feet long and can house 16 patients.
