California's Health Services department sent letters to 1,000 of the state's clinics and hospitals warning about the dangers of improperly sterilized instruments used in colonoscopies, according to the Los Angeles Times on February 13.
The department sent the letters after two Sacramento hospitals asked more than 3,000 patients to take blood tests to check that they hadn't contracted any infectious diseases from an unsterile colonoscope, an instrument used in the routine procedure. None have reported illnesses thus far.
