Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, NC, is replacing its current security department with a police force.

A new police unit will help reduce violent or criminal events at Outer Banks Hospital, according to an article in the Outer Banks Sentinel.

Hospital president Van Smith said the change wasn’t made in response to an incident at the hospital, but rather nationwide trends.

“There have been events that have occurred around the country, both in hospitals and in other public buildings, in which the presence of a police force may have prevented the event or brought it to a more satisfactory resolution, faster," he said.
