Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said February 7 the government's smallpox vaccination program was far behind schedule because of concerns of emergency health workers, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Thompson said it could take weeks to resolve those concerns. The Bush administration plans to vaccinate as many as 450,000 health workers in the first phase of its bioterror preparedness plans.
When the government announced the voluntary smallpox vaccination program in December, Thompson said the first stage of it (including health worker vaccinations) would be complete by the end of February. As of February 6, only 687 people had been immunized in the 16 jurisdictions that began administering smallpox shots, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The vaccination delays will push back the next stage of the program, which includes 10 million police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, Thompson said.
