Philadelphia-based Independence Blue Cross committed $750,000 on February 10 to fund a regional effort aimed at reducing hospital medication errors, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The grant completes funding for the $1.3 million Regional Medication Safety Program for Hospitals, which launched in June 2001 but had lacked the money to fulfill its three-year mission. The program provides 65 hospitals in Southeastern Pennsylvania with education and training on reducing errors.

The Delaware Valley Healthcare Council leads the effort. A team of experts has so far visited 13 facilities, with plans to go to the remaining hospitals by next year. The team includes representatives from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices and health research group ECRI.
