University of Pittsburgh creates bioterror response center

Emergency Management Alert, February 13, 2003

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) recently created the Terrorism Response and Information Center to provide information related to bioterrorism to physicians and local emergency agencies. In addition, the center can deploy medical personnel and resources to an attack site or wherever help is needed.

The center grew from MedCall, a round-the-clock physician tracking system that UPMC developed 14 years ago. MedCall includes immediate contact information for more than 11,000 UPMC physicians.

The system includes a database of experts in bioterrorism, infectious disease, and weapons of mass destruction. UPMC's system covers response for western Pennsylvania, which has an overabundance of inpatient beds and could find its hospitals used if there were mass military or civilian casualties.
