Tip of the Week: Preparing a healthcare facility for a natural disaster

Natural disasters happen. Healthcare facilities should have a mutual understanding when it comes to protocols and instructions during a natural disaster, according to a column in a recent issue of Briefings on Hospital Safety newsletter. Here is an example:
Q. What safety concerns should be taken into consideration right after disaster strikes, during the recovery phase when most of your systems are vulnerable?
A. Steve MacArthur: This is dependent on the event, but if I had to pick two, the ability to establish an effective perimeter (either at the edge of your campus or at the edge of your building) and the ability to establish effective communication would be the most critical in the immediate response.
