CDC to help develop health monitoring network

Emergency Management Alert, February 4, 2003

Hoping to provide early warning of a bioterror attack, the U.S. government is developing a computerized network that will collect and analyze health data of people in eight major cities, the New York Times reports.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will lead the multimillion-dollar surveillance network, which will detect disease outbreaks by tracking physician reports, emergency room visits, and sales of flu medicine.

No details were available on the program's cost or which cities will be involved, but the Times reports that experts say Washington D.C. is likely to be one of the eight.
