The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) vowed January 22 to increase efforts to reduce fatal infections contracted by hospital patients, the Associated Press reports.

The actions come six months after a Chicago Tribune series alleged that tens of thousands of hospital deaths go unreported, and that the JCAHO sometimes fails to ensure hospital quality and safety. Officials from the JCAHO say hospitals do not adequately report infection-linked deaths, adding that a review of JCAHO patient safety reports found only 10 reports involving 53 patients over the last seven years.

The JCAHO last week urged compliance with new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention handwashing guidelines intended to reduce the spread of infections. A 20-member panel of health care professionals will meet to recommend ways the JCAHO can reduce hospital-acquired infections. The panel expects to deliver a report by the summer.
