A California hospital suspended the use of its prescription and physician-order software after physicians complained that it was inefficient and compromised patient safety, according to the Los Angeles Times on January 22.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center rolled out its Patient Care Expert System in October in an effort to modernize and standardize its medication and physician ordering systems. But physicians claimed the system took more time than traditional paper systems, and raised the risk of errors, according to the Times.
In one case, a patient who had been admitted to the hospital for heart failure did not receive the medication his physician had ordered. In another, an infant was given local anesthesia a day early.
Unlike many hospitals that have purchased the software from other companies, Cedars-Sinai opted to develop its own customized system. Hospital administrators said they do not know when the system will be re-instated.
