Things just got a little less confusing for ambulatory surgical centers looking to comply with the latest fire safety guidelines.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services adopted the fire safety regulations of the 2000 Life Safety Code on January 10. The new rules, which were developed by the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association, clarify complicated and contradictory earlier versions.

Included in the rules are new guidelines for sprinkler and medical gas systems, and emergency lighting. The regulations take effect on March 11, and health care facilities must comply with most of the changes by September 11.
