Republican named to head homeland security committee

Rep. Christopher Cox, R-CA, a senior member of the House Republican leadership, will lead the newly created homeland security committee, the Associated Press reports.

Cox is the first chairman of the panel responsible for overseeing the new homeland security department, which combines security-related agencies including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Customs Service, the Secret Service, and the Coast Guard.

A member of Congress since 1988, Cox, 50, is chair of the House Republican Policy Committee.
