AMA appoints new emergency response director

Emergency Management Alert, January 8, 2003

The American Medical Association (AMA) last month named James J. James, MD, DPH, MHA, director of the newly established AMA Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Response.

James previously served as director of the Miami-Dade County Health Department from 2000 to 2002. In Florida, James oversaw public health programs throughout the county and dealt with the anthrax-related incidents in the fall of 2001. He also helped the state develop a comprehensive plan to respond to future bioterrorist events.

In his new role at the AMA, James will manage and develop a comprehensive medical and public health program for the AMA to respond to terrorism and other disasters. He will also work with the Department of Health and Human Services and state and local medical societies to share information, roll out communications strategies, and coordinate medical and public health agencies' response to terrorist events or other disasters.
