A woman who allegedly abducted her newborn from Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia, CA, after testing positive for drugs surrendered to Visalia police last month, according to the Fresno Bee.
Marcy Duarte, 21, turned herself in December 10, 2002, after she and an accomplice allegedly left the hospital with her infant daughter after child-welfare officials told her they would take the baby away from her. The child's father discovered the baby two days later and alerted police.
Duarte gave birth to the baby in the hospital's emergency room December 5, 2002. Hospital officials said she tested positive for illegal drugs, so they contacted Child Protective Services and ordered the child held until the department could investigate.
The following day, hospital officials believe, Duarte and her companion left the hospital with the baby when a nurse left them alone in their hospital room. Officials declared a "code pink," and placed the hospital on lockdown for an hour as authorities searched every room for Duarte and the baby.
