The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has released two resources to help safety professionals decide when it is necessary to evacuate a hospital and when it is safe for patients to return.
The Hospital Evacuation Decision Guide is designed to "provide hospital evacuation decision teams with organized, systematic guidance on how to consider the many factors that bear on the decision to order an evacuation." The AHRQ also reports that the guide may point out some often overlooked issues that may affect such a decision. The Hospital Assessment and Recovery Guide helps administrators decide when it's safe to reoccupy the hospital.
The guides were developed by expert panels and lessons learned from past incidents, including the hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
