There are several steps hospital emergency management coordinators can take to prepare for a documentation-focused review by The Joint Commission.

Bill Mangieri, former emergency management (EM) specialist at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY, recommends the following tips to ensure that your program is survey ready:

  1. Update your Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) and emergency operations plan to comply with the standards found in the new EM chapter.
  2. Develop a crosswalk to identify where all the elements of performance are located in your CEMP.
  3. Update your hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA).
  4. Seek out third-party validation of your HVA.
