Hospital prepared for Staten Island ferry crash that injured dozens
Emergency Management Alert, May 11, 2010
After a Staten Island ferry crashed into the St. George terminal bulkhead, injuring dozens of people, Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) responded with an emergency code and was prepared to take on a surge of patients larger than they wound up receiving, reports SILive.com.
Some of the physicians at local hospitals were there seven years ago when an accident involving the same ferry left 11 dead and many severely injured. Luckily, this crash only left about three dozen people with minor injuries, though one person was reportedly seriously injured. Many had soft tissue injuries, and bumps and bruises, according to SILive. The RUMC called a "Code Major" after being notified of the accident, initiating the highest level of mobilization, including two operating rooms prepped, as well as 10 – 15 medical staff on hand. The hospital staff members did not require all the resources gathered, but was glad to have been overly prepared for the event.
