How nursing fits into emergency management
Emergency Management Alert, May 4, 2010
As a nursing student, Chris Miles hadn't really thought about emergency management, until senior year when Miles was offered a paid internship at Maryland Emergency Management Agency's Office of Homeland Security, reports Advance Nurse.
Miles then served a year in the ED before helping aid Hurricane Katrina response as part of the Maryland Task Force 2 (MDTF 2) Urban Search and Rescue Team to Katrina. Miles was put on the team last-minute after they realized a nurse would be useful.
Miles now works at IEM, an independent contracting firm headquartered in Baton Rouge, and is a voice for including nursing in emergency management planning in hospitals. Miles' view is that nursing can help a hospital create a more practical plan, and when an emergency hits, they are the ones taking care of issues that would otherwise fall through the cracks.
