Chemical spill sends 20 people to local hospitals

Twenty employees of Electric Materials Co., a copper manufacturing plant in North East, PA, and one medic were sent to local hospitals after a chemical spill, reports GoErie.com.
The accident occurred after an employee dumped a mixture into a barrel that, unknown to him, had other chemicals in it, causing a chemical reaction which sent a noxious vapor throughout the plant. The plant was evacuated, and the man who had dumped the mixture was sent to Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, and was in serious condition. Some of the chemical mixture spilled onto the man's chest, according to GoErie.com.
Ten plant workers were treated at Saint Vincent Health Center in Erie, PA, while another 10 employees and one medic were sent to Hamot Medical Center. Three ambulances and three fire crews had to be decontaminated as a precautionary measure.
