Major earthquake hits border cities; hospital evacuated
Emergency Management Alert, April 6, 2010
The cities of Calexico, CA and Mexicali, Mexico were hit worst by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake April 4, reports the Los Angeles Times. The seven-story Mexicali General Hospital was evacuated after windows shattered and floors cracked.
The maternity ward saw nine deliveries, with two more in the last stages of delivery, all of whom were evacuated to a makeshift unit outside the hospital.
"The shaking made the babies drop and the mothers to go into labor," Cesar Martinez, MD, told the Times. "We never have this many on a Sunday afternoon."
Mexicali is still without electricity or water, although both have been restored in Calexico. In Mexicali, two people are reported dead, with several others injured.
