The 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code® (LSC) has few requirements for smoke detectors in healthcare occupancies.
Yet it’s common to see smoke detectors overused in facilities, says Peter Leszczak, Network 3 fire protection engineer for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in West Haven, CT.
If a facility has full smoke detection throughout the building or smoke detectors are installed in all patient care rooms, something may be amiss, says Joshua W. Elvove, PE, CSP, FSPE, a fire protection engineer in Aurora, CO
