In 2009, social media played role in disaster management
Emergency Management Alert, January 5, 2010
Social media site Twitter, which allows users to post 140-character updates to followers, gained popularity in emergency management in 2009, according to a recent HealthLeaders Media article.
When Ford Hood, TX experienced mass shooting on November 5, Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX provided useful updates after receiving 10 shooting victims. St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville, KY used the site to update both the public and employees on evacuating patients and the building's condition.
Such efforts may help hospitals comply with Joint Commission standards as well. In its August 2009 Environment of Care News, the accreditor noted that hospital must prepare for emergency communication.
