OSHA has proposed aligning the hazard communication standard with the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
The new rule appears in the September 30 Federal Register where OSHA states: “The proposed modifications will improve the quality and consistency of information provided to employers and employees regarding chemical hazards and associated protective measures.”
Changing to GHS will more likely affect chemical manufacturers and importers than employers who use hazardous chemical, such as healthcare facilities, but some revised training will still be needed.
For more on OSHA and GHS, see the featured post in the OSHA Healthcare Advisor.
