Feds urge businesses to plan now for flu season

OSHA Healthcare Connection, August 25, 2009

Shot, hand, and home are the keywords of the federal guidelines for employer preparation for the upcoming influenza season. Encourage vaccination among employees, focus on hand hygiene and workplace cleanliness, and make it easier for workers to stay home when sick and leave work should flu-like symptoms appear.

The guidelines and a communication toolkit for businesses and employers were jointly issued on August 19 by the Departments of Commerce, Homeland Security, Labor, and Health and Human Services.

Employers should expect to see diverse patterns of influenza across the country and should use the guidelines and information from local and state health departments to respond to flu outbreaks.
