17 people collapse on MD high school football field
Emergency Management Alert, August 25, 2009
Less than two hours into a high school football practice, 14 players and three coaches collapsed at Kent Island High School in Stevensville, MD, on August 20, reports HomeTownAnnapolis.com.
A dozen of the players developed heatstroke-like symptoms simultaneously, while the others collapsed shortly after in the 105-degree heat.
Emergency officials said they are continuing to check for other causes, but are fairly positive the group collapsed from the heat. Still, emergency workers called to the scene were prompted to investigate whether the players were sickened by a chemical substance on the field or in the drinking water.
Nine people were taken to Anne Arundel County Medical Center, which because of the potential for the involvement of hazardous materials diverted ambulances and turned away emergency room walk-ins for about 15 minutes, repots HomeTownAnnapolis.com.
