A gas leak at ABC Disposal Inc., a trash transfer station in New Bedford, MA, sent 119 sickened people to the hospital on Monday. Two of the victims were listed in critical condition and as many as 10 people lost consciousness, according to the Associated Press.
Victims were decontaminated by a hazmat team on site before being taken to the hospital. St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford received 66 patients including employees of the company and first responders, including police, firefighters, and paramedics.
The source of the vapors has still not been identified despite a thorough investigation, according to the Boston Globe. Officials believe the vapors dissipated so quickly that nothing was left for the meters to detect.
