Georgia ranks among worst in disaster preparedness

Georgia ranked sixth-worst among 56 U.S. states and territories for readiness for public health emergencies, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, which put together the report. Despite the fact that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgians are more likely to suffer from communicable and chronic diseases.
In January 2009, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services gave the White House a report on pandemic preparedness by state, which covered each state’s ability to maintain food supply, distribute vaccines, and keep transportation running. The report concluded that Georgia could not handle large numbers of fatalities nor could it cover basic healthcare during a significant emergency.
