The increased risks of bloodborne pathogens exposure to healthcare workers in correctional facilities is the focus of a NIOSH Web page posted on June 23.
Safety and Health Topic: Correctional Health Care Workers explains that the unpredictable nature of the work setting, placing security issues over infection control, and higher rates of bloodborne diseases among inmates pose additional challenges to worker safety.
The Web page provides links to work practices and areas for improvement for managers/administrators and frontline workers.
