Pressure on vendors helps determine pandemic supply levels
Emergency Management Alert, June 23, 2009
The recent H1N1 flu virus outbreak was a test for many hospitals to obtain adequate levels of supplies such as surgical masks, antiviral medications, or N95-type respirators, reports HealthLeadersMedia.com.
There is no predetermined or proven metric to help hospitals determine how many extra supplies it will need during a pandemic or other emergency, but Marge McFarlane, PhD, CHSP, MS, MT, founder of Superior Performance Consulting, LLC, in Eau Clair, WI, suggests taking the following approach:
- Determine your hospital's current census
- Figure out the necessary supplies to handle that census
- Consider those same needs if the census suddenly doubled
