We read about some interesting participants in a hospital disaster drill last week: construction crews.

St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie, WI, hosted the mass casualty exercise, which involved a simulated scenario in which a tanker truck crashed into a crane, sending the crane’s boom through the roof of the hospital, reported the Kenosha (WI) News.

About 50 employees from Riley Construction Company participated in the drill. The company is actually working on an expansion of the hospital. In one instance, construction workers used a piece of equipment to free a mock victim’s arm from rubble, according to the Kenosha News.

This type of approach to drill involvement could work for other groups, too, so think about whom in your community might benefit from participating in hospital emergency exercises who hasn’t done so yet.
