Explosion at WV energy plant tests local hospital’s hazmat preparation
Emergency Management Alert, May 26, 2009
An explosion at a Wetzel County (WV) energy company injured five men with liquid and aerosol forms of battery acid, testing the local Wetzel County Hospital's hazardous materials response plan, reports the Wheeling News-Register.
Though the men suffered skin and respiratory inflammation, the hospital's chief executive officer George Couch said his employees were organized and responded as practiced, setting up the tent, stabilizing the patients, decontaminating them, and moving them to the hospital for evaluation. The energy company was locked down indefinitely.
