New York City rehearses terrorist strike
Emergency Management Alert, May 19, 2009
The exercise simulated bombs in a commuter train tunnel underneath the Hudson River that links Manhattan to New Jersey. Hundreds of volunteers served as commuter passengers as first responders wearing oxygen masks helped "rescue them," and some streets around Ground Zero were closed to the public.
The security exercise is the largest emergency response since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Such rehearsals help different local agencies communicate more effectively and create an established chain of command in the case of a real event.
