Emergency management witnesses back efforts for an independent FEMA
Emergency Management Alert, May 19, 2009
During a recent hearing on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), emergency management experts said they support the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's push to make FEMA independent from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to GovernmentExecutive.com.
The committee is pushing for FEMA to become a Cabinet-level agency reporting directly to the president. Expert witnesses say resources and staff have been shifted out of FEMA after its creation and inclusion in DHS in 2002.
