Despite swine flu tensions, useful ideas abound at hospitals

It’s likely that every hospital in the country is discussing what to do if swine flu outbreaks occur in the community.
Here’s a quick sampling of good planning ideas culled from around the country:
- Security officers at entrances to the University of Chicago Medical Center are making sure that anyone entering the facility uses hand gel before coming in, a spokesperson told the Associated Press
- Planners at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) have invited a representative from the university’s Graduate School of Public Health to daily meetings on swine flu preparedness at the health system, said William Smith, senior director of emergency preparedness at UPMC
- The chief medical officer of Children’s Hospital Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, WI, has been updating the facility’s blog with information about swine flu precautions
