The Joint Commission?s 2009 life safety chapter incorporates many of the provisions under the old life safety assessment of the Statement of Conditions (SOC) into scored standards. The life safety assessment is now essentially defunct, and even when it was in use, it was optional. However, the electronic SOC?s (e-SOC) basic building information (BBI) and plan for improvement (PFI) remain mandatory and continue to play important roles for facilities. The life safety chapter addresses the e-SOC under LS.01.01.01, which broadly requires hospitals to comply with the Life Safety Code® (LSC). Elements of performance (EP) 1?3 in the standard detail the requirements for the e-SOC.
