Q&A: Lids on red-bag waste containers

OSHA Healthcare Connection, April 14, 2009

Q: Where can I find the OSHA regulation for lids on red-bag containers? We are having a dispute on whether lids are required.

A: The bloodborne pathogens standard requires that a regulated waste container must be closeable, (d)(4)(iii)(B)(1)(i), and closed prior to removal to prevent spillage during handling and storage, (d)(4)(iii)(B)(2)(iv).

While that does not mean you have to have a lid on it at all times, it doesn’t mean a lidded container is a bad idea.
