Misuse of insulin pens grabs FDA attention

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release warning healthcare professionals not to use insulin pens on multiple patients because of the possibility of spreading infectious diseases.
The FDA is aware of two healthcare facilities that failed to follow these protocols, putting 2,000 patients at risk of exposure to hepatitis and HIV.
Insulin pens also pose the greatest needlestick hazards to personnel in nursing homes, according to a study reviewed in the December 2008 Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
