Decontaminating EMS/firefighter equipment

Emergency Management Alert, February 24, 2009

There are specific protocols for cleaning medical staff equipment such as personal protective equipment, but guidance for cleaning EMT and firefighter equipment is often a little harder to find.

Since firefighter and EMT uniforms are not considered PPE, they do not follow the same protocols. Plus the material used for firefighter equipment requires very particular cleaning procedures. However, these uniforms can be soiled with blood or infectious materials.

OSHA Healthcare Advisor provides answers to these questions in an “Ask the Expert” post, including links for guidelines and cleaning procedures.
