Even more Joint Commission changes occur to the standards

As we reported earlier this week in Mac’s Safety Space, The Joint Commission released a number of new elements of performance (EP) that took effect January 1, which weren’t part of the originally published 2009 standards. Surveyors won’t score these particular new requirements until July 1, 2009.
A handful of the EPs will interest hospital safety professionals, as the new or revised requirements involve:
- Monitoring radiation exposure levels to staff members
- Ensuring radiation services are free of environmental hazards
- Calibrating nuclear medicine equipment annually
- Ensuring areas used by patients are sanitary
- Maintaining documentation of fire inspections by local and state officials
It’s likely many of you are already conducting these activities, but nonetheless the EPs add new scoring expectations during surveys. Check out Steve MacArthur’s thoughts on these changes below.
