On December 11, The Joint Commission released a Sentinel Event Alert about how safety interacts with technology.
Though the Alert focuses on information management and medication dispensing, there are clearly lines between technology and EC-related concerns.
For example, one of the Alert’s recommendations is to monitor potential problems when new technology is introduced, which could apply to a variety of items, including new medical equipment. The Joint Commission also suggests limiting distractions to staff members involved in data entry, which has EC implications in terms of noise and lighting.
